To be sent only after the student has been advised on entry requirements for their desired teaching areas, and has completed a self-assessment to determine their potential eligibility. The Eligibility Check is ideal for cases where the student has relevant prior study but it is unclear whether they will meet all the requirements or may need to complete some additional courses; it may also be used in cases where the student is likely to be eligible but requires further reassurance. Do not send to students who clearly do not meet the subject content knowledge requirements.

The UNSW School of Education is now offering an optional Teaching Area Eligibility Check for the Master of Teaching (Secondary) to help you understand whether your prior studies meet Subject Content Knowledge (SCK) requirements for your preferred teaching areas, as set by NESA.

This check is available for a limited time from 25 May to 12 August 2026. Applications for Term 1 2027 entry into the Master of Teaching (Secondary) program open via UAC for domestic students in early September 2026. International students can apply directly to UNSW and applications for 2027 are now open.

You may nominate up to three preferred teaching areas for the eligibility check, including a first teaching area and additional teaching area, or a double teaching area. You must review the Master of Teaching (Secondary) entry requirements and complete a self-assessment using the Subject Content Knowledge (SCK) requirements outlined under the Entry Requirements section before submitting your requested teaching areas.

Requests that do not include a completed self-assessment may not be processed. Additionally, we may request further information as follows: unit learning outcomes, assessment details, topics, content, resources.

If you are missing more than one unit in a teaching area, it may be recommended that you complete additional study, i.e., non-award study (domestic only) or a postgraduate certificate (domestic and international). Only one missing unit can be substituted with an elective course within your degree.

Please note: the Teaching Area Eligibility Check will provide an informal recommendation only and does not constitute an offer or guarantee of eligibility. All applications are formally assessed through UAC (domestic) and UNSW Apply Online (international).

This eligibility check is most useful for students in the final year of their degree, those nearing completion, or graduates seeking confirmation of their teaching areas.

If you’d like to proceed, please complete the attached template and return it along with your academic transcript by reply email. If your course outlines are not available online, you should also provide those as an attachment. Please allow approximately 20 working days for a response.
